Sound/Animation Windows 2000 Disk Quota

One of the main reasons for a lot of people to switch their Novell Netware servers to a
Windows NT server was the easier handling of the system and its configuration.
However, like other File-Server administrators, I was missing on the Windows NT4 server
an important feature (which we had on the Novell Netware server):

Disk-Quota : to limit a user in its usage of disk-space

On Windows NT4, an undisciplined user can fill up the disk on the server (sometimes with
garbage files, sometimes with a backup of the files on his local disk
), and then you as the
File-server Administrator have first to find out, which user did it and then you need to have
a "serious word" with the user requesting him/her to "clean up".

Windows 2000 allows to define Disk-quota on drivers formatted in NTFS:

In the Properties of the disk-drive:
tab: Quota

By default, "Quota management" is NOT enable
d.
Enable the Quota Management, select to
"Deny disk usage to users exceeding
Quota limits
",
and define the limit, which is valid for each user.

Select "OK" or "Apply" to activate this
feature, the system will have to scan the disk
to create the quota-report for all files already
stored on the drive.

You can the user the button "Quota Entries..."
to view the disk-usage.

if a user tries to use more disk-capacity
than defined in his quota, an error message
will be displayed of
"not having enough disk space"

Once a user has reached his quota, the report will indicate the warning:

You can adjust the disk-quota for users by
selecting the line listing the user and then
displaying the Properties.
