PCMCIA Modem Setup

I had been using a PCMCIA Modem for years in my old notebook, but when switching to a new model, it took me some time to configure my old modem under Windows 95B (OSR2), so I am documenting it for my own future use.
(PCMCIA cards are now called PC-Cards).

Like usual, we start from the Control-Panel by starting the Modem-Applet:

Since I had no modem installed, it starts up the "Install New Modem" dialog.
I tried it before: There is NO other method to setup/configure a PCMCIA Modem than selecting here "PCMCIA modem card"

	The systems asks to insert mow the Modem card.
	On inserting my "Worldport 14.400", it was briefly displayed with its proper type, but then the system continues by installing a "Standard Modem type" (which does NOT work with my Modem-card, but details on fixing that are coming later)
	The system prompts for the location of the Driver/INF-file. ( I did NOT have the floppy anymore, since my modem is in the list of Modems of Windows95, but there is at this time NO POSSIBILITY to select/specify the correct model, so I have no other choice than to continue with "Finished").
	The last screen advises me, that I can change my settings in the Modem-applet, so I did that.

	The PCMCIA-Modem is listed, Select to display the Properties.
	Under the tab: Connections, I am NOT able to define my Call Preferences. I also check the Advanced Options.
	Although my modem supports Error-Control, I am not able to activate/configure this feature.

I was able to solve my problem using the tab: Device-Manager of the System-applet in the Control-Panel:

	Select here the PCMCIA-Modem and display the Properties.
	The tab: Driver allows now to Update the Driver.
	I did NOT let the system search, but decided to select the model myself from the list.
	The list of drivers is first displayed without any entry, to get all models listed, select the option "Show all Hardware"
	The list starts with the "Standard Modem type", select now your Manufacturer and the Model.
	Here, I found the WORKING driver for my PCMCIA-Modem, which was then installed. (and that drivers works with my card)

With the proper driver now installed, lets go back to the Modem-applet in the Control-Panel to finish the setup/configuration:

	The Modem is still listed as the "Standard PCMCIA Modem", (although we have changed the driver). Lets check now the Properties.
	Tab: General: I myself like to listen to the modem, while it is connection, therefore I change the "Speaker-volume" from "Off" to a higher value.
	Also, modems should always be configured for the Maximum possible speed ( most modems are able to compress data during transmissions, which can result on transfer of Text-files to an effective data-transfer twice as high as the rate modem-speed).
	Tab: Connection I usually put a Checkmark on "Wait for Dial tone before dialing". The value of 1 Sec for "Cancel the call if not connected in" Needs to be increased, I use 20 sec.
	Under the Advanced options, I can now also activate "Error Control" with "Data-Compression".
