Networking Procedure: Adjust the Network Configuration for Windows 2000 |
|
This page is only for Windows 2000 ! ( there is a different procedure for Windows 95/98/ME ) you need to logon as "Administrator" for this step. |
![]() |
There are several methods to call up
the Network configuration : - "Settings" / "Network and Dial-up Connection" - Desktop: properties of "My Network Places" - Control-Panel : Network and Dial-up Connection |
![]() |
Here you configure the configuration of the local network ("Local Area Connection") and of any dial-up networking connection (like a modem connection to the Internet) To view/modify the Network configuration, display the properties (right-click) |
![]() |
By default, all required
components for a network between Microsoft Windows systems are installed, using TCP/IP-protocol. Since TCP/IP is on Windows2000 the default protocol, I strongly suggest to use it, do NOT delete it. ( if you have Windowss95/98/ME systems on your network, please configure them also for TCP/IP ). |
![]() |
If you need another protocol (example: NetBEUI to network to a DOS-systems ), then use the button "Install" to add additional components, like NetBEUI. |

| Nothing to configure | |
| On a network WITHOUT a server , you need to define the Frame-Type | |
| I hope , that you first had a look at TCP/IP basics, so that you know what you are now configuring: usually just the IP-address, as you should have defined it already |
![]() |
Select the TCP/IP and ask
for the "Properties": by default your system is configured to "obtain an IP-address automatically" (via a DHCP-server or Windows2000 Auto-IP configuration). Select to "Specify an IP-address" and enter your IP-address (usually: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.3 or....), then define as "Subnet Mask" : 255.255.255.0. For a simple home-network, that is all what is required (Windows2000 Internet Connection Sharing ICS will require later more work). |

3) Verify / Define
the names for the computer and workgroup
![]() |
You have decided already
on the name for your computer and for your workgroup. Verify these names in the "Network Identification", which is part of the properties of "My Computer" on the desktop or the "System" applet in the Control-Panel : |
![]() |
Select the tab: "Network
Identification" and verify your "Full Computer name" (MUST be UNIQUE on the network) and your "Workgroup" name (MUST the IDENTICAL on all systems) To change these names, click on "Properties" |
![]() |
For a simple network of
Microsoft Windows PC's without an NT4 server or a Windows2000 server defining a Domain, you need to select the radio button "Workgroup" and define a workgroup name, which MUST be identical on all systems on your network. |
4 ) File-and-Printer Sharing :
![]() |
Unlike Windows95/98/ME, File-and-Printer Sharing is installed by default. Just make sure, that it has not been removed. |
| Next Step: | Test the Network Connection |
