Something now was brought to my attention:

When checking in the "Control-Panel" under "Modems", only real modems are listed. |
But the "System"-applet of
the "Control-Panel" shows
more:

Each possible "Direct-Cable Connection"-method is
listed as a "Modem",
and has properties, which can be configured:

Change the max.Speed from the default of "19.200" to "115.000" |
That should give your more speed: approx. 9-10
Kbytes/sec !
(approx. 6 x faster than using the default
19.200)
However, to getup to this increased throughput, you need to have
on both systems a COM-port with FIFO-buffering:
the 16550A ( using the older version based on the 8250 will no
be so fast).
This can be verified with the MSD-utility:
